Tax planning and return help for RSUs, ISOs, and NSOs

Equity compensation can affect wages, withholding, estimated payments, alternative minimum tax, investment-sale reporting, and more than one state return. Tavella CPA Group helps organize the award documents and tax forms, project the tax consequences of a proposed transaction, and reconcile the reporting on an accepted tax-return or planning engagement. Tax projections do not include investment recommendations or a decision to exercise, hold, or sell a security.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about equity-compensation tax planning and return support

Can you tell me whether I should exercise or sell?

No. Tavella CPA Group can explain and project tax consequences based on stated assumptions, but it does not provide investment recommendations, valuation advice, or a decision to exercise, hold, or sell a security. Coordinate investment decisions with an appropriately licensed adviser.

What records are commonly needed?

Common items include the award agreement and vesting schedule, exercise or settlement confirmations, recent pay statements, Forms W-2, 3921, and 1099-B, brokerage statements, estimated-payment records, prior returns involving the award, and work or residence states during the relevant periods.

Does employer withholding mean the full tax is paid?

Not necessarily. Withholding is a payment toward the final federal and state liabilities, and the amount may differ from the tax produced by total annual income and the taxpayer's facts. A projection can compare expected tax with withholding and estimated payments before a payment deadline.

Can an ISO exercise create tax before I sell the shares?

An ISO exercise generally does not create regular federal income at exercise, but the exercise spread may create an alternative minimum tax adjustment. The actual result depends on the exercise details and the taxpayer's full return, and a later sale has separate regular-tax and AMT reporting considerations.

Is tax-return preparation included?

Only when the written scope lists the applicable federal and state returns. A projection or reporting review can be a separate service or be coordinated with individual return preparation.

How do I upload documents?

After engagement setup, use the secure client portal and the upload instructions provided by Tavella CPA Group. Do not send Social Security numbers, tax returns, bank information, or other sensitive documents through the public contact form or ordinary email.

Is this service cloud-based?

Yes. Organizers, secure document uploads, messages, electronic signatures, invoices, and final documents can be handled online through the appropriate secure workflow.

Are additional states included?

Only the federal and state filings listed in the written scope are included. If another state filing is identified, the additional scope and fee are confirmed before that work proceeds.

How long will preparation take?

Timing depends on the service, complexity, completeness of the information provided, filing deadline, and current availability. Expected timing is discussed when the scope is confirmed; submitting a consultation request does not reserve a filing deadline.

What happens if information is missing?

Tavella CPA Group will identify the missing items and explain what is needed next. Preparation or filing may need to pause until the required information is received, and any deadline or extension options will be discussed based on the circumstances.
