What to know first

For a calendar-year individual, New York's four general 2026 estimated-tax dates are April 15, June 15, and September 15, 2026, followed by January 15, 2027. New York generally requires estimated payments when you expect to owe at least $300 of New York State, New York City, or Yonkers tax after applicable withholding and credits. Federal payments do not satisfy a New York obligation, and self-employment income can also require a separate metropolitan commuter transportation mobility tax review.

Who may need New York Form IT-2105

A New York estimated-tax review can be relevant when wages do not have enough withholding or when income comes from self-employment, a business, rental property, investments, retirement distributions, equity compensation, or another source without withholding. Residents, part-year residents, and nonresidents can have different New York income and allocation questions.

New York's general individual threshold looks at the expected balance after withholding and applicable credits. It can include New York State, New York City, or Yonkers tax. A self-employed person may also have to evaluate metropolitan commuter transportation mobility tax separately. Use the current IT-2105 instructions for the taxpayer's filing status and facts rather than carrying a federal amount into New York.

2026 IT-2105 dates and late-year income

New York provides later starting dates when the requirement first arises during the year. The current IT-2105 instructions should be checked for the applicable due date, any filing-and-payment exception for the final installment, and disaster or other announced relief.

Calculate and recalculate the New York amount

Start with expected New York income, deductions, additions, credits, withholding, and payments made on the taxpayer's behalf. The calculation can also require attention to New York City or Yonkers tax, real-property sale estimates, partnership or S-corporation payments, and the metropolitan commuter transportation mobility tax.

New York's underpayment framework includes current-year, prior-year, and annualized-income concepts. Which method is available and what percentage applies can depend on income and facts. Uneven income can require Form IT-2105.9 and period-by-period records. Recalculate after a material gain, business change, move, property transaction, stock-compensation event, or withholding adjustment.

Pay through an official channel and preserve proof

New York Online Services can accept and schedule an estimated payment from a bank account. Card payments may involve a service fee, and a taxpayer can also use the current IT-2105 voucher and mailing instructions. Select the correct taxpayer, tax year, and payment type, then retain the confirmation.

Federal and state confirmations should be kept separately. Married taxpayers whose New York estimated accounts are maintained separately should take extra care to identify the correct primary taxpayer and account before sending a payment.
