CPA help preparing unfiled and prior-year tax returns

Falling behind does not make the filing requirement disappear. Tavella CPA Group helps individuals and small businesses identify the returns and periods involved, organize available records, prepare accepted prior-year filings, and coordinate related state or owner returns when those services are included in the written scope.

BEFORE YOU REQUEST A CALL

See what fits this service and what is scoped separately

This service may be a fit when

  • One or more personal or small-business returns may not have been filed
  • You can identify the likely tax years, entities, states, and available records
  • You want original return preparation rather than a promise to settle tax debt
  • You are prepared to address current filing responsibilities while older periods are reviewed

These items require separate scope or another professional

  • Bookkeeping reconstruction, payroll corrections, and missing information returns
  • Payment plans, offers in compromise, collection alternatives, and penalty relief
  • Agency representation, examinations, appeals, litigation, or criminal matters
  • Every return, jurisdiction, owner, tax period, and advisory project outside the written scope

Build a filing-period inventory before preparing returns

Start with the years, return types, entities, states, last return known to be filed, and any IRS or state correspondence. Tavella CPA Group then identifies the records needed to evaluate the scope. Transcript information can help confirm certain reported items, but it may not contain complete basis, expense, deduction, state, or business records.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about unfiled and prior-year tax-return preparation

Can a prior-year return be prepared without every original tax form?

Sometimes records or transcript information can help reconstruct part of the filing, but transcripts do not replace all source documents. Business expenses, basis, state information, deductions, credits, and other facts may require records that the IRS transcript does not provide.

What if the IRS prepared a substitute return?

The IRS states that a taxpayer generally should still file an accurate past-due return when the IRS has prepared a substitute return. The account history, substitute-return stage, available records, and any notices should be reviewed before deciding what to submit.

Can current-year and older returns be prepared together?

Potentially. Each tax year, federal or state return, entity, and owner filing must be identified in the engagement. Current compliance may also affect how an agency handles an older account or collection matter.

Does this service include resolving the amount owed?

No, unless a separate written engagement expressly includes related notice or representation work. Preparing a return does not guarantee a refund, penalty reduction, payment arrangement, collection alternative, or agency outcome.

What should I share on the first call?

Share the approximate missing years, return types, states, entities, last filed year, known notices, and condition of the records. Do not send Social Security numbers, tax returns, transcripts, bank records, or notices through the public form or ordinary email.
